How to Create a Squarespace Website from Scratch (Step-by-Step Guide)

At the face of it, Squarespace may seem a bit daunting for someone who hasn’t used the platform, but in this guide, I’ll walk you through the entire process step by step. By the end, you'll have a fully functional website and a solid understanding of how Squarespace works.

If you want a visual walkthrough, make sure to check out my full tutorial on YouTube where I cover everything in depth.

Be sure to check out the YouTube guide also!

Step 1: Getting Started with Squarespace

To create a new Squarespace website, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Squarespace.com and log in.

  2. Click the “Create Website” button in the top right corner.

  3. You’ll have two options:

    • Use a template (great for beginners).

    • Start with a blank website (better for customization).

For this tutorial, we’ll start from scratch so you can learn the full process.

Step 2: Naming Your Website

Once inside the Squarespace editor:

  • Give your website a name (e.g., your business name).

  • Squarespace will generate a default one if you don’t choose.

You can always change this later, so don’t worry too much!

Step 3: Customizing Your Site Styles

Before adding content, set up your site’s style and branding:

  1. Go to Site Styles → Adjust Fonts and Colors.

  2. For this tutorial, we’ll use Squarespace’s default options, but I highly recommend using custom colors and fonts to stand out.

Pro Tip: If you’re designing for a business, use your brand colors for consistency.

Step 4: Adding a Homepage Background

You can make your homepage stand out by adding a background image or video.

  1. Click Edit Section → Background.

  2. Upload a high-quality image or select from Squarespace’s stock images.

  3. Adjust the contrast and effects to match your design.

If you want to use a video background, I’ve created a separate tutorial for that—check it out on my channel!

Step 5: Structuring Your Homepage

Now let’s add content to your homepage:

  • Add a title (H1) → “Website Design Services.”

  • Insert a description of what your site is about.

  • Upload a featured image to showcase your work.

  • Customize buttons and links for better navigation.

Make sure to adjust colors so that everything is easy to read and visually appealing.

Step 6: Adding Pages (Contact, About, Testimonials, etc.)

A great website needs key pages like:

✅ About Us → Tell your brand’s story.
✅ Contact Page → Make it easy for visitors to reach you.
✅ Testimonials → Show reviews from happy clients.

To add a new page:

  1. Go to Pages → Click “+” → Select Blank Page.

  2. Name it About Us, Contact, or anything else.

  3. Customize it with text, images, and forms.

Pro Tip: Add a testimonial slider with custom CSS to make reviews stand out!

Step 7: Navigation & User Experience

Make sure your website is easy to navigate:

  • Use a clear menu at the top.

  • Add buttons & links for smooth navigation.

  • Organize pages in logical sections.

If you’re unsure how to create a navigation bar, I have a full video guide on that too!

Step 8: Advanced Features (Custom Code & CSS)

Squarespace is powerful on its own, but you might need custom CSS for extra features.

For example, if you want scrolling testimonials, you’d need some custom code.
